The 12 paintings show Ma Yuan’s detailed studies of water. These works, completed 900 years ago, rely entirely on lines to express the appearance of water under different weather and geographic environments and in different states of movement. Water - placid and tumultuous, lively and vivacious - is portrayed realistically.
The paintings have been named:
Dancing waves in the wind,
Fog surrounding the hills,
Turbulent waves,
Rippling and sparkling lake water,
Darken sea waves under the clouds,
Soft curves in autumn,
A slow counter-current in the Yellow River ,
Unfolding surges on a magnificent scale in the Yangtze River ,
