VIDEO DESCRIPTION

发布说明

An apparently empty mind can still feel occupied. A passage from Human Surrender moves between cycling, repetitive scrolling, stillness and the difficulty of facing what remains. This film essay connects that passage with Herbert Simon's account of scarce attention. It also considers a competing reading: repetition can offer pleasure or relief. Listen to the principal voice while the images and other voices continue their own encounter. Their relation is part of the analysis. Original film: Shoot Self with You / Human Surrender (人类投降派), directed by He Fa, P4 Theater. Watch the full film with English subtitles: https://youtu.be/F1riPOyQuCI Format: original Mandarin film sound, bilingual English/Chinese analytical intertitles, and English/Chinese captions. Analytical intertitles are intentionally silent. This is an editorial close reading of a film, with observable details, interpretations and alternative readings kept distinct. Reference Simon, H. A. (1971). Designing Organizations for an Information-Rich World. In M. Greenberger (Ed.), Computers, Communications, and the Public Interest (pp. 37–72). Johns Hopkins Press. Relevant discussion: printed pp. 40–41. Original chapter scan: https://gwern.net/doc/design/1971-simon.pdf Scope: Simon addresses attention allocation in information-rich organizations. This essay applies that conceptual question to a film passage; it does not present the chapter as an experiment on modern short-video platforms, a clinical diagnosis, or evidence that one activity necessarily causes another. The four-second silent pause is an editorial device, not a test or treatment. Captions follow the film's principal Mandarin voice using the supplied subtitle track. Quiet overlapping speech is not comprehensively transcribed. #FilmEssay #Attention #P4Theater
