“Just pretend I'm not here.” Can a camera really disappear from a room?
A short film made from Human Surrender rehearsal and filming materials. After a performed scene, attention shifts to care, eye drops, and the person behind the camera. Performance and off-take moments remain distinct; this is not a claim about the participants' private relationships.
Recorded 20–21 July 2023; newly edited in 2026.
Original location sound. No added music or narration. Chinese and English subtitles are embedded in the picture. Some quiet words remain indistinct.
Contains changing coloured lights and projections.

The camera is rarely just an observer; it is an active participant in the room. This short edit captures the tension between performers and the lens.
In this experimental film, the artifice of acting dissolves when the camera remains running. We watch the transition from rehearsed lines to the mundane reality of set work—adjusting lights, applying eye drops, and negotiating space. This edit prioritizes the raw, unpolished moments usually left on the cutting room floor.
Drawn from the rehearsal process of Human Surrender, this work explores how the presence of a lens redefines intimacy. It is not a documentary about private lives, but a record of how performers negotiate the camera gaze while trying to inhabit a scene.
